The Amadour trail goes from Soulac-sur-Mer (Gironde) to Rocamadour (Lot) crossing the departments of Dordogne and Lot-et-Garonne. A dozen UNESCO World Heritage sites mark the 500km long route.

The Amadour trail route is the culmination of four years of work carried out in collaboration by the FFRandonnée committees of the four departments crossed, the French Agency for the Ways of Compostela and the teams of the departmental councils.

A route born from a legend

The approximately 500 km of walking route is based on the legend of Zacchaeus, known as ""Amadour"".

Amadour (Zachée) and his wife Véronique are said to have landed in the Médoc fleeing Christian persecution in Palestine. After founding Notre-Dame-de-la-fin-des-Terres, the current church of Soulac-sur-Mer, Véronique died. Amadour then left to evangelize the South-West by going up the Dordogne valley, and settled as a hermit in Quercy, in the place which would take the name of Rocamadour.

The Amadour path should become a long-distance hiking trail under the name GR® 81.
It will be divided into 21 stages of 11 to 32 km, in particular to facilitate access to the stations.
